Prof Anton Sculean

D.M.D., Dr. med. Dent., M.S., Ph.D.

Professor Sculean has been a recipient of many research awards, among others the Anthony Rizzo Award of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and the IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine and received honorary doctorates (Dr. h.c.) from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary and from the Victor Babes University in Timisoara, Romania.

He has authored more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 16 chapters in periodontal textbooks and has delivered more than 350 lectures at national and international meetings. He is the editor of the book Periodontal Regenerative Therapy published by Quintessence and guest editor of the Periodontology 2000 Issue published in 2015 entitled "Wound Healing in Periodontology and Implantology". 

He serves on the editorial board of more than 12 dental journals, among others Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Periodontal Research and Clinical Advances in Periodontics and is Associate Editor of Quintessence International, Clinical Oral Investigations, Section Editor of BMC Oral Health and Editor in Chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry. 

Professor Sculean served from 2009-2010 as president of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR, is past president of the Swiss Society of Periodontology and President (for the period 2018-2019) of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). His research interests focus on periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-esthetic periodontal therapy, use of antibiotics, antiseptics and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.

Prof Mark Bartold

Emeritus Professor, University of Adelaide.  Formerly Professor of Periodontics and Director, Colgate Australian Clinical Dental Research Centre, University of Adelaide (2002 – 2017). Half time private specialist periodontics practice in Adelaide.

Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Adelaide in 1979; Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with First Class Honours 1980; Doctor of Philosophy 1983. He qualified for Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Stream of Periodontics in 1991; Doctor of Dental Science 1996. Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Past President of International Academy of Periodontology, ANZ Division of the IADR, and Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology. 

Editorial board member of 10 international dental journals, an Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontal Research, Periodontology 2000 and Clinical & Experimental Dental Research  and Editor of the Australian Dental Journal. 

Research: use of periodontal stem cells for periodontal regeneration, and periodontal / systemic health interrelationships.  Authored 285 scientific papers. 

Awards: Membership of the Order of Australia (2004) for contribution to periodontal research and education,  Honorary Life Membership Australian Dental Association (2013); Honorary Life Membership American Academy of Periodontology (2014); Straumann/IADR Award for Periodontal Regenerative Medicine (2015); IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Periodontal Disease (2015); Elmer S Best Award 2016 (Pierre Fauchard Academy) for contributions to dentistry of international significance. 



Dr Andre Bendyk 

Andre completed his specialist training in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at the University of Adelaide in 2007. He is a Past President of the Australian Society of Periodontology, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. 

He is frequently invited to give lectures and training courses to dentists and study groups around Australia. He has been a Senior Lecturer and Examiner at the University of Adelaide. His clinical and scientific interests are in the areas of dental implantology, hard and soft tissue grafting and advanced periodontitis. Andre has been a Partner at Adelaide Periodontal and Implant Professionals since 2011. Outside of the practice he enjoys tennis, surfing and spending time with his young family.




Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield  

Professor Heitz-Mayfield received a Masters Degree in Periodontology (1996) and Odont Dr (1998) from Lund University, Sweden. The recipient of a Brånemark scholarship, she was subsequently awarded an ITI scholarship at the University of Berne, Switzerland where she became Head of the Oral Microbiology Research Laboratory, from 1999-2003, including a time as visiting professor at Forsyth Institute, Boston.

Received the André Schroeder Research Prize in Implant Dentistry in 2002. Current positions include Adjunct Professor at the International Research Collaborative, The University of Western Australia, University of Notre Dame, Western Australia, Associate Professor at The University of Sydney, and at The University of Hong Kong. Chair of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Research Committee, and member of the ITI Board of Directors. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research. Scientific publications in the fields of periodontal regeneration and management of peri-implant diseases, including chapters in the Lindhe textbook Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. As a specialist in periodontology Prof Heitz-Mayfield maintains a private practice limited to periodontology and implant surgery with an emphasis on regeneration, prevention and comprehensive treatment planning.


Dr Tino Mercado

Tino is a Periodontist in full time private practice for almost 20 years in Sydney and the Blue Mountains, NSW. He is a Clinical Mentor  and Clinical Lecturer in the Postgraduate Diploma for Oral Implant Course at the University of Sydney. He has a Senior Clinical Lecturer Appointment at the University of Queensland, School of Dentistry. 

He is the State Council Representative for NSW at the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP) and has recently been appointed Periodontal Examiner at the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). He has lectured both nationally and internationally including recently on topics of periodontal medicine, connective tissue graft and peri-implantitis management. He was twice recipient of the National Health and Medical Research Council Scholarship (NHMRC), first in 1997 (MDSc) and recently for his Doctor of Philosophy degree (2012). He is completing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Ivanovski looking at the role of biologically active materials in connective tissue graft for periodontal and peri-implant defects and management of peri-implantitis. 

He is a patron of fine art and opera and enjoys living in the Blue Mountains.



Dr Barbara Plutzer

Barbara completed her Undergraduate Dentistry Degree and Postgraduate Doctorate in Endodontics at the University of Adelaide. She is a Partner at North Terrace Endodontics, where she has maintained a full time specialist practice since 2010. 

Barbara is a Past President of the Australian Society of Endodontology (SA Branch), Senior Lecturer in Endodontics at the University of Adelaide and is a Fellow of the RACDS and Pierre Fauchard Academy.  Outside of her professional commitments, Barbara enjoys art, bad TV and spending family time with her husband and young kids.



Giulio Rasperini

Prof. Giulio Rasperini received his degree in dentistry and specialized in Orthodontics. He is an active member of the Italian Society of Periodontology, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (vice-president from 2016-2017), he is a full member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (BAAD) and an ITI fellow.

He serves on the Editorial Boards for several publications, including: the International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, as well as the Journal of Implant & Advanced Clinical Dentistry; whilst also being a guest reviewer for the Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implant Research, the International Dental Journal and Quintessance International. 

He has been the recipient of a number of research-focused awards in the area of Periodontology & Implantalogy. These include: International Quintessence Publishing Award (Boston 2000 - 2004), Goldman (SIdP 1996 -2010), Clinical Research Award EAO (Glasgow 2010), R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award (AAP Los Angeles 2012) & Align Research Award (California 2013).

Prof Rasperini currently serves as the Professor in Periodontology at the University of Milan (Italy), an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan (USA), and lectures extensively around the world. He also maintains a private practice specializing in periodontics and implant therapy in Piacenza, Italy.



Chris Waalkens

Chris graduated with BDS from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 1979. After working in Christchurch hospital and general dental practice he graduated MDS University of Otago (periodontology) with distinction 1984. He has worked in full time specialist private practice in periodontics in Auckland from 1985 until the current time. 

Chris has been actively involved with a number of dental committees. Amongst these he has been: 
Vice President of the NZ Dental Health Foundation 1988 – 1999, President of the Auckland Dental  Association 1995 - 1996,  President of the New Zealand Society of Periodontology 2000 – 2002,
Member of Board of the Division Periodontics, RACDS 2008-2012. President of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP)  2010 – 2012.

Chris was elected a Life member of ANZAP in 2018.
